Preventative Dentistry

Preventative dentistry is the foundation of our general dentistry services at Pineview Aesthetic & Family Dentistry. We believe that by emphasizing preventive care, we can help our patients avoid costly and painful dental problems in the future. Our comprehensive preventive dentistry services include dental cleanings and exams, dental X-rays, fluoride treatments, and more.

Dental Cleanings & Exams

Regular dental cleanings and exams are essential for maintaining good oral health. Even if you brush and floss regularly, there are still areas of your mouth that can be difficult to reach with a toothbrush or floss. Over time, plaque and tartar can build up in these areas, leading to tooth decay and gum disease.

During your dental cleaning, our dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth and gums using specialized tools. They will also polish your teeth to remove surface stains and leave your teeth feeling smooth and clean.

After your cleaning, our dentist in Bellevue, WA, will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. They will check for any signs of decay, gum disease, or other dental problems. Catching these issues early on is key to preventing them from becoming more serious and potentially requiring more invasive treatment.

Dental X-rays

Dental X-rays are an important tool for diagnosing dental problems that may not be visible to the naked eye. We use digital X-rays at Pineview Aesthetic & Family Dentistry, which produce high-quality images with minimal radiation exposure.

We may recommend dental X-rays during your routine exam to check for signs of decay, bone loss, or other dental issues. We may also use X-rays to plan for certain dental procedures, such as a dental implant or a root canal.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay. We offer fluoride treatments to our patients as part of our preventive dentistry services.

During a fluoride treatment, we will apply a concentrated fluoride gel or varnish to your teeth. The fluoride will absorb into your tooth enamel, strengthening it and making it more resistant to decay. We may recommend fluoride treatments for children, as their developing teeth are especially susceptible to decay. However, fluoride treatments can benefit patients of all ages.

Other Preventive Dentistry Services

In addition to dental cleanings, exams, X-rays, and fluoride treatments, we offer a range of other preventive dentistry services to help our patients maintain good oral health. These services may include:

  • Dental sealants: Dental sealants are a thin coating that is applied to the back teeth to prevent decay. We may recommend sealants for children as soon as their permanent molars come in.
  • Oral cancer screenings: We perform oral cancer screenings during routine exams to check for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Custom mouthguards: If you grind your teeth at night or play sports, we can provide a custom-fitted mouthguard to protect your teeth from damage.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry refers to dental work aimed at improving the appearance of teeth, gums, and/or bite. The focus is primarily on enhancement of dental aesthetics in color, position, shape, size, alignment and overall smile appearance. At Pineview Aesthetic & Family Dentistry we provide a variety of cosmetic dental services in Bellevue, WA:

Restorative Dentistry

Despite our best efforts, sometimes dental problems arise. Our restorative dentistry services are designed to address these issues and restore your teeth to their full function and beauty. Restorative dentistry is a field within dentistry that focuses on restoring the function and aesthetics of the teeth and oral structures. This can involve the management and treatment of diseases or conditions that affect the teeth, gums, and maxillofacial (jaw and face) region.

Fillings

If you have a cavity, our dentist in Bellevue, WA can repair the damage with a dental filling. We use tooth-colored composite fillings that blend in with your natural teeth for a seamless, natural look. You would need fillings if you develop a cavity, which is a small hole in your tooth. Cavities are caused by tooth decay, which happens as a result of plaque build-up. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that accumulates on your teeth.

When these bacteria break down the sugars in your diet, they produce acids that can erode the enamel, the hard outer layer of your teeth, leading to cavities. If you're experiencing toothache or sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks, this could be a sign of a cavity. To confirm this, I would conduct a thorough examination, potentially including x-rays, to ascertain the presence of cavities. If a cavity is found, a filling would be the appropriate treatment to restore the health and function of your tooth.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a cap that covers a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its function and appearance. We offer porcelain crowns that are custom-made to match the color and shape of your natural teeth. You would need a dental crown if you have a tooth that's severely damaged, decayed, or discolored. A crown, also known as a cap, is used to entirely cover or "cap" a damaged tooth.

Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape, or alignment in the mouth. Dental crowns are recommended for several reasons. If you have a cavity that is too large for a filling, I might recommend a crown. Crowns are also used to protect weak teeth from breaking, restore already broken teeth, or support teeth with large fillings and little remaining natural tooth.

If you've had root canal treatment, the crown can protect the restored tooth. If you've lost a tooth, a crown can be used to cover a dental implant. In cosmetic dentistry, a crown can cover a severely discolored or misshapen tooth to improve your smile.

During the procedure, I would first prepare your tooth, remove any decay, and then fit and apply the crown. The dental crown is created in a lab to perfectly match the shape, size, and color of your tooth for a natural appearance.

Dental Bridges

If you are missing one or more teeth, a dental bridge can fill in the gap and restore your smile. We offer both traditional and implant-supported bridges to meet the unique needs of each patient. You would need a dental bridge if you have one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges are used to "bridge" the gap where teeth are missing. Having a gap can cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. A bridge is composed of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap (these two or more anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth) and a false tooth or teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Learn more about Dental Bridges.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. Implants provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. You would need dental implants if you have one or more missing teeth and want a long-term, sturdy replacement that feels and looks natural. Dental implants are surgically inserted into your jawbone, where they serve as the roots of missing teeth. Implants are made of titanium, a material that is well tolerated by the body and integrates with the bone over time, a process known as osseointegration. This makes dental implants a very stable support for artificial teeth, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. You can learn more about dental implants here.

Dentures

Dentures are a removable appliance that replaces missing teeth. We offer both full and partial dentures to restore your smile and improve your ability to chew and speak. You would need dentures if you have lost some or all of your natural teeth, whether from gum disease, tooth decay, or injury. Dentures replace missing teeth and can help restore your smile and your ability to eat and speak better than you could without teeth. There are two types of dentures: complete and partial. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Complete dentures can be either "conventional" or "immediate." Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, while immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed.

Partial dentures are used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. A removable partial denture usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, often connected by a metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. Getting used to dentures may take a bit of time, and they may feel a bit awkward or uncomfortable for the first few weeks. But most people get accustomed to them and can eat and speak more comfortably within a short amount of time. Regular dental check-ups will ensure your dentures fit properly and remain comfortable and functional. Learn more about dentures here!
